PrairyErth (A Deep Map): An Epic History of the Tallgrass Prairie Country Overviews

Three months on the New York Times bestseller list, PrairyErth is now in paperback. Robert Penn Warren pronounced Heat-Moon's Blue Highways "a masterpiece." Now Heat-Moon has pulled to the side of the road and set off on foot to take readers on an exploration of time and space, landscape and history in the Flint Hills of central Kansas.

PrairyErth (A Deep Map): An Epic History of the Tallgrass Prairie Country CustomerReview

In reading several books by John Janovy Jr. about Keith County, Nebraska, I soon discovered that Nebraska was certainly not a boring state, especially to a biologist. That this should be evident to anyone in the field almost goes without saying, but the dull image of the Midwest grasslands still lives on. Here there are no tall forests, no majestic mountains or spectacular sea beaches and cliffs. Still this country has its charm and often a lot of history and lore if truth be told.

I was convinced to read "PrairyErth" by a botanist who specializes in grasses. This book has been recommended to his class in grass systematics every year as suplementary reading, but so far none of his students has ever taken him up on this recommendation. This is certainly a great pity as William Least Heat-Moon has produced a masterpiece of over 620 pages that would open the eyes of the readers to the real wonder inherent in even such closely circumscribed areas as Chase County, Kansas, which is the main subject of the book.

The author certainly delivers on his minutely detailed examination of almost every aspect of this nearly square county a little over 150 miles of the geographic center of the continental United States. We learn about the grassland, the Native Americans, the development of the railroad, the local colorful characters, the murders, the geology, and in short William Least Heat-Moon gives us the heart and soul of a county that turns out to not only be not like the gray Kansas of the "Wizard of Oz", but a living and fascinating piece of real estate, right down to the roots of the tall grass prairie and the cottonwoods along the creeks.

If you would really learn about our country, I would suggest you start with this book. I can give it no higher recommendation.

10 tips for stress management in the information

Image : http://www.flickr.com

1978-2008 - 30 years review of our world, and stress

Have you noticed that our lives are more stressful than they were 30 years ago? If you can answer this question, chances are good that you are a member of a huge demographic group as the "Baby Boomers", and for this accession, are a driving force in our society are known. "Baby Boomers" have a tendency of the population after the Second World War in 1946 and born before 1965. This group of people has brought fundamental changes in ourThe company, including the use of disposable diapers, jars of baby food, Disneyland / Mickey Mouse Club / TV, Ford Mustang in 1960 minivan in 1980, the liberation of women, women in the workforce, Lexus / Acura 's, computers, pagers, cell phones, e-mail, the "Information Age", the creation of "movement" Youth "," active aging "Lifting Liposuction Botox, 500 TV channels, real-estate boom and bust, and boom and busts, sales of anti-oxidants, increasing the cost ofMedications, drugs, the popularity of sushi, called for the consumption of wine outside of France and Italy, anchovies leisure travel in time (end) aircraft unhealthy major sports events (Super Bowl, March Madness, Tiger Woods Golf ', Pay per View events, and the "X" games "), rock-concert-tour, movies with special effects, and wars for oil.

Since the initiation of stress Education Center in 1978, there has been a huge increase in identified and diagnosedsymptoms related to stress. Many symptoms such as insomnia, panic / anxiety, headaches, sexual dysfunction, have gastrointestinal symptoms, hypertension, drug abuse / dependence, heart disease, depression, obesity, some chronic discomfort, pain, and dysfunction of the immune system are all associated with an increase of stress in our society. But because we are now more stressed than ever before in human history? The answer might be to trends driven by the "Baby Boomers", and this group, the preference of highwere the expectations of our new technologies. Remember, we have some very primitive genetic coding that are trying to keep pace with modern technologies should be soaring. For example, as a child grows up in 1950, I saw my parents working at home from work by 5:15 Clock, sitting for half an hour in the "living room" to discuss their day to smoke cigarettes and drink their cocktails in particular with a dinner of "family" together. This is the way of managing their stress levels before 1950we found that smoking and alcohol is bad for us and there is no time to sit, chat, and de-briefing the day. We have had alcoholism, cancer of the lung and exploding television coverage of the "cold war", but then there was full ashtrays on the tables from your doctor if you have discussed the most recent vaccination programs. People would stay home for a week to sit the two-week vacation at his home and relax. People were not responding to their pagers, cell phones,Fax, e-mail, or in general added to 24 / 7, as we are today.

And 'interesting to note that in 1978, the birth of the new "Information Age", was on the verge of explosion on our society in North America. Personal computers have been developed. Media coverage of the world use international conflicts on our TV during dinner time. Scientific and technological progress has driven our economy and the pressure on our relationship. The Middle East is more powerful thanThe control of oil production and its instability on the basis of Muslims against the beliefs and visions of the Western world. The parents were under pressure and to control their children's schedules and the development of the education system has changed more than control in the past generation, while the family "divorce traditional definitions. Natural resources are discovered, runs out. Nuclear explosion, but uncertain. Shortage of gasoline were experienced. American education began in the fall and prestigeEffectiveness. Asian economies have exploded. PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) has been called psychoneuroimmunology, and was developed to explore the possible connection between the mind / emotion and health. In 1978, people were still in relation to payment for health care, rather than wait for their insurance to cover all modes of medical care. Health care procedures were almost more convenient. AIDS is not yet clinically detected.

In comparison, in 2008, the "Information Age"with its new technology is in full control of our lives. We are more "connected" 24 / 7 ever. People drive their cars phone conversations distracted. People talk loudly on the work of individuals, as they walk down the street with their cell phones placed in their ears. (There is the idiot "village", which seem to speak of themselves as are the sidewalks of our cities to move.) Phones ring and disturb us in restaurants, church, cinema,Clinics, schools, airports, elevators and shopping. People go on vacation and still communicate daily with their work. We see the TV and see the heads "Talking", while the test flight on the bottom of the screen, which is not discussed in the context of the message. The screen images are displayed on the right side of the "talking head" and we wonder why the "news" so stressful. We have "journalists" embedded "on the front showing the distant war on our TV in ourFamily room and then ask if the TV violence desensitizes our children.

At work, we are living in constant change. 8 hours-days are a thing of the past. Many of us are the work of 2 or 3 people to help our jobs, and "downsizing", because our positions. We have: software changes every quarter, hardware changes, policy changes, changes in procedure, downsizing, hiring, communication, international business / meetings, maintenance problems, the challenges of leadership, issues,Challenges of development management techniques for people who are not trained in administration, communications challenges, multi-tasking, multi-national society of micro-management of local jobs, international telemarketing (from India, China, anywhere ) and commute longer recovery times. We have machines that are too complicated for everyone, but some mechanical engineers to work. We e-mail and requests for more current information. We set the expectations on us that welead in this high-tech world, and produce 3 times the amount of work, because we have paid to be 2 times higher than that of the workers did a generation ago. People want more "life" in the workplace and in their lives. The workers want "flextime" schedules ", job-sharing", and want to work from home by "telecommuting". The work takes a closer look like never before taken to the environmental challenges in this sense, the physical and mental health. Retention of key employees is a key issue for manyOrganizations and "quality of life" issues of equal rank or higher compensation at many companies interested in retention.

Our primitive survival response mechanisms are not changed to keep pace with technological advances .... So .... We feel more stress / pressure than ever before in human history. One of the most important strategies to deal with stress better, the increased use of denial, the connector as a "head in the sand", knownStress response. We are so overwhelmed that we have time, stress management, or even self-awareness of this epidemic of practice. Thank you for the quality of private life. Our productivity can be reduced. Our short-term and long-term health may be affected, yet we have a fix for a "quick", which do not require much time and effort to cope with stress. Drugs that do not solve the problems of our medical request and often have side effects, ifwork. More children will be diagnosed at an earlier time, with physical and psychological stress symptoms. We are living longer and demanding better health, even with advancing age. In spite of our labor-saving devices and equipment, we seem to work longer and harder. Most working families need two incomes to support the lifestyle you choose, that our "expectations" and the role models of social support. Our children have to go up even more than before because their parents arefull day of work or characterized by their 24 / 7 facilities, their career distracted.

These are not just developments and problems for the United States and Western countries. Asian economies explode as their needs for more energy and technologies. Eastern Europe is very different compared to 1978. The global climate change will affect everyone in the world. Food shortages are beginning to be felt in many countries. Wars and conflicts in the Third World "countriesImpact on other economies. Cultures are changing faster than ever before in human history. Communications and global trade has on our lives and resulted in the global economy and trade on a cycle of 24 hours will be performed every day. The race started, and only the people in denial can not see far-reaching impact of modern changes. The world is a small and produced jointly by companies that never happened so before.

We need the impact of these changes on our conscienceHealth and wellness. Awareness is half the battle. The other half of this battle is to develop better coping strategies that one can do as individuals, enabling us to resist change and keep pace with the rapid changes in motion. Our health, our productivity and our quality of life depends on our ability to adapt to these changes, the positive possibilities ... You can not do or even control all the changes that we encounter, but we can learn to better control the wayWe respond to these challenges.

Some possible suggestions for managing stress include building a variety of possible solutions, including:

1. New models for the survival of stress for the common people and families. The old rules of survival stress, such as: denial, evasion, drug abuse (medicating ourselves), for food "must be totally out to harass or for more positive management techniques and effective stress of being replaced .

2. Change of consciousness andPriorities in terms of improved productivity and quality of life, including a healthy and realistic vision of life in this fast paced world. A marked increase in knowledge about the aging of the baby boom, and this has an impact on our society and the world.

3. Support positive change in habits and are therefore responsible partners or mentors, the professional trainer / therapist, clergy, educators, healthy family and friends. "

4. Realistic goals and realisticThe plans for achieving these objectives.

5. Time for self-care! Learn the lesson that he needs more time to spend time to settle in nursing. Commitment to care of itself!

6. To give control over our need to "waste" and "Quick Fix"

7. Changing expectations about the use of new technologies. Using technologies such as biofeedback, to raise awareness and then take control of stress responses. (For more tools and resources for stress management and biofeedback techniques to learn the physical controlbad habits.

8. An evolution of mental health and emotional well-being (not necessarily religion). Finding ways to maintain a healthy balance that honors the mind, body and spirit.

9. An education system that truly prepares us for the "Information Age" and our role in it.

10. A world that is so technologically advanced that they are indeed the individual points and the true quality of life ...

Cuisine a Latina: Fresh Tastes and a World of Flavors from Michy's Miami Kitchen Overviews

At Michy’s, acclaimed as Miami’s best restaurant, Michelle Bernstein is building a national following for her fresh new take on Latin cuisine. Born and raised by a food-loving Argentinean mother in Miami, Michelle grew up fluent in Spanish and steeped in the city’s cosmopolitan, Latin-influenced culture. She explored South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Using the freshest ingredients and the French training she went on to acquire, she has blended all these traditions into a cuisine that is uniquely hers.

Cuisine à Latina introduces us to Michelle’s world. Her Latin food is unlike any that you’ve probably tasted. Full of flavor, it is familiar but exciting — vividly seasoned but not fiery hot, with touches that reflect the casual vivacity of Miami. You’ll find many appetizers to light up a gathering: Fried Calamari with Chile-Coconut Sauce, irresistibly flaky Ground Beef and Tomato Empanadas, and bright Peruvian Mixed Seafood Ceviche. Or start off with Michelle’s cool riff on a Spanish classic, White Gazpacho with Almonds, Grapes, and Cucumber.

Michelle gives you plenty of great party dishes with Latin flair, like Beef Tenderloin with Creamy Horseradish, or the colorful Fideua, bursting with seafood and herbs, which is similar to paella but much easier, and made with spaghetti instead of rice. You’ll also want to try her sensationally simple grilled steak with chimichurri sauce, the Argentinean version of salsa. Her Cornish game hens, marinated in garlic-lime mojo, with chorizo sausage-bread stuffing, are perfect for Thanksgiving — or a summer evening — and she shows you how to make the same recipe with turkey.

Michelle’s uncomplicated “Mama cooking” will spice up your everyday repertoire: Mom’s Arroz con Pollo (chicken with yellow rice), Tuna Schnitzel with Cucumber Slaw, Pork with Prunes and Apricots. Her side dishes and salads beg to be at the center of the plate: Chili-Fried Onion Rings, Mexican-Style Corn on the Cob, and Bibb Lettuce with Avocado, Shredded Jack Cheese, and Buttermilk–Charred Jalapeno Dressing. Cuisine à Latina may change your view of Latin food — and it will revitalize your cooking.

A three-time James Beard Award nominee, Michelle Bernstein is chef-owner of the Michy’s in Miami, Michelle’s at Carysfort in Key Largo, Florida, and MB in Cancun. A former professional ballerina, she trained at Johnson & Wales and under the renowned chef Jean-Louis Palladin.

Andrew Friedman has coauthored cookbooks with Alfred Portale, Tom Valenti, the former White House chef Walter Scheib, and many others. He also coedited the popular anthology Don’t Try This at Home and collaborated on the New York Times best-selling memoir Breaking Back.

A classically trained French chef who grew up in Cuban-flavored Miami with an Argentinean mother and Midwestern father, then lived in New York and spent time in Italy, Bernstein, owner of Michy's in Miami, offers cosmopolitan fare, some of it simple, some much less so.

Like Seared Foie Gras with Mexican Chocolate and Cherries. Or Beet Salad with Blue Cheese Chantilly (Blue cheese mixed with heavy cream). Or Prosciutto-Wrapped Trout Stuffed with Fennel and Leek.

But Shrimp on Toast with Peas, Tomato, and Parsley is a simple comfort food as is Collard Greens with Balsamic and Brown Sugar, or a fragrant braise of Pork with Prunes and Apricots. Angel hair Pasta with Artichoke Hearts, Olives, and Tomatoes could be tossed together after work. Duck Breasts with Oaxacan Mole is complex but, once made, the mole can be refrigerated for three months.

Each recipe is introduced with a bit of culinary evolution, and Bernstein sometimes offers serving suggestions and plating ideas - gorgeous color photos also help with presentation ideas. Lively and ambitious, this is a book for the fairly assured cook.

Why Do Pirates Love Parrots?: An Imponderables (R) Book (Imponderables Books) Overviews

Ponder, if you will . . . Is yawning contagious? Do starfish have faces? Why do they put crinkly paper into pairs of men's socks? Why is it that cans of Diet Coke float, but cans of regular Coke don't?

Pop culture guru David Feldman demystifies these questions and much more in Why Do Pirates Love Parrots?

One of the Imponderables®—the unchallenged source of answers to civilization's most perplexing conundrums—and charmingly illustrated by Kassie Schwan, this book provides you with knowledge about everyday life that encyclopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs just don't cover. And think about it: Where else are you going to find out how they get the paper tag into a Hershey's Kiss?

Why Do Pirates Love Parrots?: An Imponderables (R) Book (Imponderables Books) CustomerReview

David Feldman returns! . . . for fans of his series of
IMPONDERABLES books (and I'm one), that's good news because
by reading his latest effort, you'll learn the answer to the question
raised in the title: WHY DO PIRATES LOVE PARROTS? . . . along
with answers to such other questions as: Why are most psychics
women? How does the vending machine know when it's Sunday?
And why do peanut butter cookies have crisscross marks
on them?

I like the fact that Feldman thoroughly researches each and
every question, then proceeds to answer it in a manner that
not only informs but also puts a smile on your face . . . for
example, in case you've always been wondering what do they stuff
in medicine balls to make them so heavy, he found this out from
the MediBall company:

The balls are filled with an aqueous gel composed of potassium
polyacrylate and water. It is non-toxic and non-hazardous,
the same material is used an absorbent in baby diapers. Should
not hurt you unless you eat too many of them.

I also liked his discussion of the most frequently asked irritating
questions . . . among them: Do blind people dream? (Yes, but
they rarely see anything in their dreams.) . . . also: How many
licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? (The
average seems to be 600 to 800 licks, though my finding
is more along the lines of Mr. Turtle, who when in commercials
was asked how many licks it took him to get to the center,
replied, "I never made it without biting."

The accompanying drawings by longtime Imponderables illustrator
Kassie Schwan added to my enjoyment of this wonderful book that
will make a great holiday gift for folks of all ages.

Novice Off-Road Adventures

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I do not look like the typical off-road adventurer. I'm just a 31-year-old single mother of three children under the age of 10, 5 and 2, but I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4. Has a 3 "lift, 31" Maxxis Buckshot Mudder tires, wheels and Cragg Black.

Last year I owned a 2000 Mazda MPV minivan. My kids liked it because it had a video player, but surprisingly, they were not sad to give it to Grandma and Grandpa.

In fact, all three of them are for the protection of"Princess". We called our "Jeep (XJ) Princess of mud.

I practiced off-road at 26 My Best Friend's acre of land. He has created several trails near his house on the bay.

The practice has helped me for my first real off-road adventure in October 2007. I was on my way to Oliver Springs, Tennessee Windrock. This is of 73,000 hectares, a mining company that leased.

I met with some other owners XJ XJlist from Yahoo, most of whom came fromKentucky. I was able to show them that a woman can take a stock Jeep Cherokee XJ up with the tricks. I made a few dents and scratches, not a problem for me.

When off-road are the world's problems, otherwise you end up cracking the password of a tree on the side of a hill or are expected to walk off a cliff / mountain. The adrenaline is impressive. Looking at the XJ'ers an exciting career in front of you is an exciting way. If you turn to get the adrenalinea.

Amazed Windrock trail 39 that having a portion of the trail the rest of the group removed with their problems, the road tires. A Windrock I had no change, so I was still just a street, stock Jeep Cherokee.

Then I blew off the path 16, which form a part of the ascent route on the first try, while the veterans and took three tries to two.

Nine months later, they all meet near Harlan, Kentucky, Black Mountain. This timeMy XJ has had from the street was changed.

I even brought my oldest child, daughter Shiloh, who is 10 years. Windrock after the trip was very excited, I've accepted this is a kind of holiday for us.

Me, Shiloh, and my best friend Janice to meet with her husband and my best friend, Mike. He had done a day before just to be with the boys. When I say, I think, will meet in the middle of the whole paper jeeps. Trail 45looks innocent at first, because the main road. But since it rained there was a lot of mud and slipping.

It 'been fun even if its able to do some' of my final without the boys around too. Finally, we met with them in a bowl. The shell has many trails for off-road and off-road vehicles. After the boys asked me if I wanted to go, I ride with me, Janice. I was pleased that the adrenaline. I got it too.

The boys had fun aroundwith me, because I had the opportunity a few weeks before, in practice, Coppinger Cove, near Jasper, Tennessee. Mike made me feel something that looked like a small hill innocent. I had to jump almost a Dukes of Hazard, which is why the boys were exciting to me.

While in Kentucky, it was raining. The first day in camp (for us women) It rained and rained. Our plans had to be changed, because some of the roads were extremely difficult, if not dangerous. All we had hoped to go to MasonArea Jar, but had to be canceled because the rocks were too slippery. Mike had had a section that requires the kids in front so all possible to prevent the tape from the side of the mountain has been mentioned. With her out of the rain, the kids just do not want to risk smoothly.

Most of us walk 15 feet, as it was nice and muddy. Midway through the first section was very smooth. It 'was fun, but I ended up being the last man. Neal, our leaders and "experts" was firstme. After the third section, I had him look bad because I could before, all three tests. Neal apparently forgotten his XJ had put in 4 Low as everyone else.

One of the things that I had the opportunity to experience the beginning of the rock garden. Since I have my coat on the tracks before Kentucky (one set was prepared to be made), Neal decided to let me just try the first part of it. I hope for our next adventure is on the rails, so I try to have a rock gardenout.

After we got home, he expressed some of the guys, as I continued to be amazed at the realization of the path that some of the amateurs had difficulties. We all had fun, the most important part of spring and autumn raises scan.

Living in the southeastern part of Tennessee is not unusual for the repeal XJ revoked or really an SUV or a truck with larger tires. For some of us, off-road has become part of life. This is a way to move is only for a while 'fromWorld that can sometimes be cruel. We get a rush of adrenaline that confidence in a positive trend.

Usually this is done, the men who off-road. But look for them, a woman who did makes it even more fun and exciting.

Ball Regular Mason Canning Jar 1 Pt., Case of 12 CustomerReview

A good quality canning jar can be used over and over again as long as you don't break it or chip the sealing edge. I have used mayonnaise and jelly jars from the store, but I've had more breakage with those because they are slightly thinner glass and weren't designed for home canning. I can attest to the dismay at the loss of perfectly good food due to breakage of the jars in the pressure canner.

If you garden, or if you buy food in volume at sale prices, home canning, freezing, or drying make perfectly good sense. Whether you use quarts or pints is up to you. I use both sizes, and the Ball Mason Canning Jars are perfect for all. (Be careful freezing, because overfilling can cause breakage even of the best jars.)

Having said that, I do not recommend purchasing jars online unless the price is extremely low or the shipping is free, because shipping costs can be horrendous. Unless you have no alternative, buy them locally. (There may be some exceptions: If you are shopping online for a company that has a local outlet, they may ship to that outlet for free and you can pick them up yourself.)

Five Recommended Ingredients for Life --

This is a work in progress. Tastes change. Memories change. The recipes are always updated.

I could not help but draw a parallel between the river of life and the use of metaphor to explain some things. Philosophy is not a great book here. Only trial and error mixed flavors, some empirical, obtained with the spices from the ebb and flow of life.

Doing genealogical research a few years ago, I looked and searched online for a recipe for "Chili Sauce" that my great-auntRose had gathered in her kitchen Nicetown (Phila.), about fifty years ago during a long summer recess in elementary school.

My father had a holiday and little money. He also wanted to Aunt Rose, a recipe that her mother had used to share. Aunt Rose had to survive a year. We went to a farmer in the country, bought fresh vegetables and collected a thing as an Irish-American version of the sauce. Then there was the "preserved" in vessels of this type.

I auntRecipe by Rose, that my father had written down. The sauce "chili," which had been stored in my memory, they stopped, until I found something very similar to the original composition and after - the taste. In retrospect, this, or the end of the research was probably as satisfying as the food.

I found a recipe for Fanny Farmer Cookbook in 1923 under the label "celery, tomatoes and enjoy on the Internet that my memory, and viewing of two long-dead relatives, my father and my great aunt fitRose, on this day in the kitchen for five decades, too. Internet is in many ways to serve small humanity, or at least these people from time to time.

Now, knowing you have in this field of mortal existence for half a century, I can do my own personal recipes, and the name of ingredients for the addition of the measure (?) The fee for seasoning, perhaps in a balanced life?
